Ping/Pang

It has been a long time coming, but I think that my obsession with pop culture has finally paid off…As I may have mentioned before, the topic for my English class is American Popular Culture…Our first paper required up to watch either a talk show or reality television program and analyze ts messages, relating them to our views and the views of the writers of various sources…I watched a pair of shows on MTV, which I might talk about later, since they are really another story…

Today was the first ‘Peer-Editing’ time in this semester…like last semester, we exchanged our papers with other students to have them evaluated before we hand in a final draft…as I was reading a few other papers, the general consensus from those who were reading mine is that I really know my stuff…In addition to the two shows that I watched, I alluded to examples of similar messages in other reality shows, taking on the genre as a whole…I shrugged it off, saying that I make up for not knowing how to do math by knowing a lot about TV and such…but each person who read my paper was genuinely shocked at/impressed with how much I expressed a knowledge of the topic…At one point (and I’m not sure which comment it was in reference to, since I make a lot of them during that class), the teacher said to me “I’ve heard things about you.”…considering that the only person she would have heard things from would be my English teacher from last semester (who loved me and my writing), and taking into account that she had a smile on her face, I would say that she has heard good things about me and my writing abilities…

Now, I don’t mean to toot my own horn (though just the thought of doing so make me kind of tingly), but it’s sort of become the norm for me to know a lot about pop culture, and to have no one really care about it unless I was on their team in a game of Trivial Pursuit…to have people notice, albeit in a somewhat stunned manner, something that I am passionate about, like pop culture or music, is something of a success in my book…hopefully, I will humble myself enough to stay focused on my papers, and write consistently good material…all expertise aside, I strive to be a good writer…and a good writer is both informed and thorough…
